Starlite Lanes

“Starlite Lanes” in Royal Oak Township, just across 8 Mile Road from north central Detroit. This is a couple blocks from where the WRIF studios are.

Eastside Al came up with the goods for this place:turns out this was the Duke Theater designed by Charles Agree in 1947, and heres a link to original photos:

Wow, that’s cool. That marquee has been boarded over for as long as I can remember, which is at least 30 years or more. Interesting that the place was a bowling alley. I always assumed it was a theatre.

  3. EastsideAl Says:

I believe this was originally built as the Duke Theater, and later converted to a bowling alley.

So, Dfunk did you get inside? What does an abandoned bowling alley look like?

Looking at the beautiful pictures here:

I believe that’s still the original Duke marquee.

I drive by every day now. Looks pretty well sealed except for the open door on the roof behind the marquee on the left side of the building.

No – I did not get inside. This building is about 20 yards from the State Police mini station. They could basically respond in full force on foot by running across the alley. lol.

Yeah man. it’s tough running wit a full camera bag. Been there. Good way to get exercise though.
